Difficult Airway Management Devices — History and Evolution

The incidence of difficult endoscopic procedures and intubation has not changed much since the late 1880s. For decades, clinicians have struggled with traditional airways. From the time of Alfred Kirstein1 and his invention of the autoscope in 1885 to the slightly improved modification of the same device in the 1890s by Chevalier Jackson, the need for successful endoscopy has been highly sought after. By the 1940s, Robert Miller and Robert MacIntosh saw a demand for a more sophisticated device which lead to the development of the laryngoscope. What was once innovative is now outdated yet still continues to be commonly used among today’s clinicians.

Today's Challenges

Some of the challenges faced by clinicians due to improper airway management include:

  • Excess Force
  • Trauma to Airways
  • Poor Views of the Targeted Areas of Examination
  • Multiple or Prolonged Attempts
  • Multiple Operators
  • The Need for Multiple devices

AGobiTM Solution

Targeted areas of examination, such as the vocal cords, trachea or esophagus can be clearly viewed while allowing for greater patient comfort. Clinicians find their landmarks quicker and swifter while the patient’s airways are stabilized and adequately oxygenated creating a more effective way to allow recovery from anesthesia or sedation.

AGobi, Inc., a global technology leader, develops solutions for healthcare professionals that help improve clinical outcomes. In addition, AGobiTM helps reduce overall costs and enhance the quality of life for patients, thus enabling less invasive procedures, creating innovative diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy for early stage evaluation and treatments. AGobiTM is transforming the future of healthcare.
